I got my first drum when I was 7, and eventually got my first full drum kit at the age of 10. At first, I studied only graded material from books in my lessons, but I soon developed a love for discovering as much new and varied music as possible and playing along by ear - everything from Red Hot Chili Peppers to S Club 7!
In secondary school, I started playing in as many different groups as possible. I played in the school jazz band, concert band, and orchestra, and I also started bands with my friends. These were my first real experiences of playing with other musicians rather than a backing track, and it’s been my favourite method of music making ever since.
I went to music school in Manchester at the age of 16, which is where I really started to vary my learning. As well as continuing my passion for pop and rock playing, I started learning some much more advanced latin, funk, jazz, samba, and fusion styles. I got to play with some of the best musicians my age which forced me to up my game, and was so lucky to learn from world-class teachers every week.
I moved to London when I was 19, to begin my studies at the Royal Academy of Music and start my career as a professional musician. Having access to some of the best musicians in the world on a day-to-day basis made me into the musician I am today, and more importantly, my teachers gave me all the tools I needed to play anything I wanted, something i’ve tried to pass on to my own students.
Since I graduated, i’ve played in some of the biggest shows and some of the best orchestras in the country, on both drum kit and percussion. I love the variety in my career and I think every musician should try and open themselves up to as wide a variety of musical opportunities as possible.
